Stadium 2 Membrane Over-Roof

Brief

The existing membrane roof (32,000 m2 in area) leaked regularly, and the ongoing maintenance costs were expensive; therefore, the challenge was to replace or upgrade the roof envelope and associated gutters and penetrations and prepare the envelope for a Solar PV system. The building had an existing Mansafe system to limited areas of the roof; however, a more permanent edge protection system was requested.

Challenges

The work had to be done on a live site, active 24/7. Material deliveries and associated crane locations and lifts to transfer the materials to the roof level had to be coordinated with the Next site logistics team to prevent any impact on their activities. The structure had to be checked to ensure sufficient capacity to accept the additional loads from the new membrane system and future PV system. Numerous penetrations across the roof needed to be weathered as part of the upgrade works. Temporary access and edge protection had to be considered, along with permanent edge protection.

Results

Lynx Building Solutions worked closely with the Next team throughout the project to ensure the works were carried out safely and Next suffered no interruption to the daily activities. We initially completed a full structural assessment of the existing structure and services. We determined that there was sufficient capacity for an over-clad solution to be introduced, plus a PV system in the future. Working with one of our key supply chain partners, IKO Group, a system was designed for this project, from which Next received a product warranty. The total roof area was upgraded along with all gutters, which were re-lined as part of the scope. Lynx Building Solutions also installed a new Mansafe system and fixed and tested the lightning protection system. Initially, a temporary edge protection system was installed during construction but was replaced with a permanent ballasted solution as works were completed. The works were completed on site in 18 weeks, six weeks ahead of the programme.
